Utah-based artist and photographer John Poppleton has created a series of striking portrait photographs using black lights and special paint applied to female models.
Explosive
Poppleton became a professional portrait photographer in 1993. At first he captured traditional images and settings, like weddings, before finding his niche as a more fantastical photographer.
Purple and Red
Poppleton writes that his career received his biggest push “when the owner of a faerie collectable store asked me to create 12 images for a calendar.”
Lightning Strikes
Poppleton’s inspiration to use black light as an artistic tool came from “a sleepless night in a hotel room bed.”
Sunset
“I’ve always been in awe and wonder of the beauty found in nature,” Poppleton wrote on his website. “Inspired by the colors and textures found in sunsets.”

Even though she’s lying down, this picture doesn’t put us to sleep.

A calming yet vibrant picture, just like an actual sunset.
Seeing Double
Poppleton often uses Photoshop to complement his photos, including a 2003 stint of giving people elf ears that coincided with the popularity of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy.

The subtle cleverness of this woman’s hair becoming the waterfall is masterful.
Dramatic Colors
Poppleton is available for hire, and lists his mission statement as wanting “to create a piece of art that is as unique as you are.”

Poppleton describes “The excitement and anticipation of the next lightning strike with its thunderous heart pounding report.” If you ask us, he nailed it with this photo.
